Stability and biodegradability of quaternary ammonium etherified-octenyl succinate esterified starch size

Abstract: To improve the using effect of starch size,a series of amphiphilic starch size (QAS) are prepared with 3-chlorine-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride as etherifying agent and octenyl succinic anhydride as esterifying agent.QAS samples are characterized by infrared spectroscopy.The influences of the substitution degree ratio between hydrophilic group and hydrophobic group and total substitution degree on the viscosity thermostability and biodegradability of QAS size are discussed,and the compatibility of QAS with common sizing auxiliaries is evaluated.The results show that the viscosity fluctuation rate of QAS size does not surpass 15%,and is hardly influenced by temperature.QAS can be well compatible with common sizing auxiliaries,so it has a bright sizing application prospect.With the increase of the substitution degree of cationic group and total substitution degree,the biodegradability of QAS size reduces to some extent,so the total substation degree of QAS is suggested under 0.05.
