The degradation behavior of sulfadiazine (SDA) in the chlorine-disinfected effluent from a wastewater treatment plant under simulated solar irradiation was systematically investigated.Within the pH range of 6-10,the reaction rate constant between neutral SDA and hypochlorous acid was significantly higher than that of anionic SDZ,while dissolved organic matter exhibited an inhibitory effect. The total contribution of radical species was approximately 40%,among which hydroxyl radicals (·OH) played the most significant role (12.6%),with their contribution increasing as pH rose.Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the five-membered heterocyclic ring and the sulfonamide group were the primary reactive sites.Fourteen intermediate products were identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, leading to the proposal of three degradation pathways:cleavage of the five-membered heterocyclic ring, oxidation of the aniline group, and detachment of the sulfonamide group.
