Summary and comparison are performed on the existing capacity recovery techniques for iron-chromium flow batteries, such as chemical re-balancing,fuel cell-like discharge-type re-balancing,electrolysis cell-like charging-type re-balancing,and chemical-hybrid electrochemical re-balancing,which have their own advantages and disadvantages. In the future, there is a need to optimize electrolytes and electrode materials, explore capacity recovery techniques based on new materials or new principles, and conduct long-term experiments and cost analysis to promote the iron-chromium flow battery technology to break through bottlenecks, enabling large-scale commercial applications and providing robust support for the efficient utilization of renewable energy.
