Three imidazolium-based sulfonic acid functionalized ionic liquids were used as catalysts in the production of diosgenin.Using single factor experiment and response surface methodology (RSM),the optimum hydrolysis conditions were obtained with [PSMIm]PTSA amount 2.75 g,hydrolysis time 4.02 h,solvent volume 5.58 mL and hydrolysis temperature 100℃.Under the optimum conditions, the diosgenin yield of 16.72% was obtained, which reached 98.6% of that obtained by the traditional method with H2SO4 as the catalyst. The purity of diosgenin was 66.2%.After recrystallization and column chromatography, the purity was increased to 83.9% and 98.5%,respectively.Under the optimized conditions, the hydrolysis solution containing ionic liquid could be recycled through simple filtration and washing. The ionic liquid demonstrated good catalytic performance and reusability in the preparation of diosgenin. The optimized process for diosgenin production is stable and feasible as well as shows clear environmental benefits.
